The tradition of the European gaze
Alongside the exhibitions of the six photographers invited to produce new images for Fotografia Europea. Reggio Emilia 2007, is an exhibition of the work of three masters from the previous generation, creators of projects on European cities.
The photographers
Ferdinando Scianna,
Bernard Plossu and
Pentti Sammallahti have been chosen for their transitional role between photographers like Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Frank who, in the years after the Second World War, worked on important projects dedicated to the citizens of Europe, and a new generation who are now thinking about the same themes in a new form.
These three photographers have been chosen in order to follow an artistic through line that is prevalently photographic, aimed at avoiding contamination from other genres and that focuses on the gaze, before focussing on the medium through which it is achieved.
