“I make constructed pictures. I build fictional scenes, which I record with the camera. I myself play the characters in my pictures. However, I don’t see my pictures as self-portraits. The person in the picture is a fictional narrator in the same way as there are narrators in literature. My pictures are fantasies, I represent an atmosphere or a mood through fictional scenes. Fantasy is a means to speak about emotions. I often shoot pictures when traveling abroad, away from home. I am always hunting for new locations for pictures, searching for scenes that inspire me and seem somehow magical to me. My pictures have been taken in different locations, mostly outside Finland and Helsinki, where I live. This time I wanted to do it the other way around. I wanted to take a closer look on my home city, the place were I feel so comfortable, and not at all like an observing stranger. All of these 5 photographs have been shot in the same location, in hostel Mekka, in the heart of Helsinki.”
