Production: Palazzo Magnani
The exhibition at Palazzo Magnani dedicated to Werner Bischof recounts the photographer’s vision of three continents during his travels from 1945 to 1954. The communicative power and elegant composition of his photographs reveal a profound truth that would otherwise have remained undiscovered. Two years before his death, Bischof, sought after by leading international magazines, wrote from Indochina after having completed a commissioned reportage that can be considered his photographic legacy: “I’ve had enough: this hunting for stories has become hard to handle – not physically, but mentally. I no longer feel the joy of discovery in my work. Here, what counts above all is material wealth, making money and inventing stories to make things interesting. I hate this trade in sensations….It was like prostituting myself, but now I’ve had enough. My inner self is and will always be that of an artist.”
