Biography
WERNER BISCHOF
Werner Bischof, one of the greatest photographers of the twentieth century, was born in Zurich on 26th April 1916. In his youth he wanted to be a painter, but he later enrolled at the School of Applied Arts in his native town, where he became fascinated by photography. He became well known as a photographer and advertising designer and, in 1945, he began a collaboration with a Swiss organisation to help those populations that had been deeply affected by the war. He travelled through various European countries and documented living conditions, suspended between the pervading memory of tragedy and the hope for a possible new future. From 1951 to 1953, he travelled to Asia (India, Korea, Japan and Indochina) and then to America. Bischof died in Peru on 16th May 1954, when he and two guides fell into a ravine on the Andes
