La cittą e lo straniero/The city and the Foreigner
With: Marina Ballo-Charmet and Jean-Louis Garnell.
Presented by Elio Grazioli
Both Marina Ballo Charmet and Jean-Louis Garnell have placed the theme of people from other countries at the centre of their pictures. The former has captured them in the open, on Sundays in the park (in Milan), in groups that meet to party, dance and chat, making the park a substitute for the house that is not big enough for them to meet altogether. The latter has portrayed family groups inside flats (in Paris) and we are not sure if the flat belongs to them, to the photographer or to someone else. Are they the owners? Guests and friends? Or visitors? A ‘foreigner’ is never truly at home.

Le periferie dello sguardo/The look suburbs
With: Cezary Bodzianowski, Armin Linke and Bernard Plossu.
Presented by Elio Grazioli
Three different artists and three peripheries of the gaze, made up of evanescence and provocations. Cezary Bodzianowksi interpreted the role of two improbable roadside prostitutes: one was on the outskirts of Reggio Emilia and the other was from Emilia, the artist’s home village in Poland. Prostitution is a delicate theme, but here Bodzianowski handles it with irony, making us view it with different eyes – the eye of art, not of reportage. Armin Linke, a “post-modern” photographer goes to Nicosia to discover not only division and conflict, but also an underground network that unites the two parts of the city (perhaps unbeknown to them). It is a metaphor for the unconscious and for possible future unity. Bernard Plossu photographs suspended atmospheres, people from behind and out-of-focus moments, where one has the impression of having arrived either too early or too late. The event has already happened, or perhaps it will not happen. It is not the decisive moment, but it is all the rest: imagination, feeling and poetry fill the emptiness of the scene.
