Biography

CEZARY BODZIANOWSKI

Ritratto di Cezary BodzianowskiCezary Bodzianowski (Lodz, Poland, 1968) studied at the Fine Arts Academy of Warsaw between 1988 and 1990, and at the Académie Royale des Beaux Arts in Antwerp from 1990 until 1994. He is an out of the ordinary artist not very well-known outside of Eastern Europe, also due to his stand against the art market revealed through his choice to preferably express himself in the transience of performing actions, usually carried out far from the eyes of the public or in the presence of chance observers. An acute observer of society and the art world, he deals with issues tied to the ordinary flow of everyday life, creating a disturbing action towards our normal perception of reality and discreetly altering the established order of our everyday existence. His creation consists of bringing a personal imaginary world into universal reality. Bodzianowski does not follow the essential rules of performance, and does not trouble himself with its duration, its audience or the need of a sensational conclusion. Instead, he deals with simple, discreet actions, alienating and absurd inventions, unique actions set in ordinary everyday life, often documented by short films or simple photo reporting made by his wife, Monika Chjonicka, at times the only member of the audience at the events. The artist himself, protagonist of the actions he stages, defines his work as a “personal theatre of events” that offers many connections with the Dadaistic movement. His performances in institutions and galleries have been many: Tirana Biennial, Albania, 2001; Wiener Secession, Vienna, 2001; Salzburger Kunstverein, Salzburg, 2002; Kölnischer Kunstverein, Cologne, 2003; Biennial of Prague, 2005; Mumok Wien, Vienna, 2006; and Kunsthaus Graz, Graz, 2006.
