Biography

GIORGIO BARRERA

Giorgio Barrera was born in Cagliari in 1969. After completing his studies and after a period of collaboration with Joel Meyerowitz, he became interested in sociology and focused his research on the daily rituals of domestic life, street photography and on landscape photography. In his images, both public and private spaces are a stage, a scenic container produced by society and by the history of the experience of individuals trying to build their own identity. He recently completed several documentaries and short films, experimenting with new cinematographic language.  
He was awarded the prestigious Canon and FNAC prizes and his work has been published in books and catalogues both in Italy and abroad. His most important exhibitions include "The sidewalk never ends" at the Chicago Art Institute in 2001 and his participation at festivals such as the International Photography  Biennale in Turin in 1999, the Plovdiv International Photography Festival of 2002 and the Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie in Arles, 2003. He lives and works in Milan.
