Corpi per la storia contemporanea (Bodies for Contemporary History)
In its special make up, photography is today considered a fundamental historical source. Through these extreme cases, which are the bodies of the victims of violence, deportation, those in a coma, even bodies on the boundary of life and death, the photography of bodies has contributed to reformulating some of the basic concepts of history and obtaining justice for the victims.

Il corpo del crimine: fotografie dal Sahara Occidentale (The Body of Crime: photographs from Western Sahara)
Reflections and testimonies from Western Sahara: a land of invasions and conflicts.
“We have a habit of taking photographs. It’s […] a delicate and effective task: we communicate with words and images from the very heart of prisons and courts. There are no professionals with us and we learnt how to do it by ourselves.” Aminatou Haidar
The Reggio Emilia Scuola di Pace (Peace School) has invited the Neapolitan photographer Patrizio Esposito, curator of an archive section of anonymous portraits at the Sahrawi War Museum, as well as curator of the project Necessità di Volti (The Need for Faces) to reflect on the role of photography in bearing fitness to the conflict between the Sahrawi people and the Kingdom of Morocco. This is the struggle for self-governance of a people that has lasted more than thirty years. This resistance has changed from armed combat to faith in the role of international diplomacy and the United Nations. The Scuola di Pace offers the town the opportunity to reflect on the role of photography in recounting the most intimate effects of war, beginning with the experience of the Sahrawi people, who by collecting images of their enemy and taking pictures of themselves, have tried to testify to the existence of the conflict and the identity of those they are fighting against. This is a struggle that has long been denied and hidden and which finds its voice and identity in these images. Photography, in particular images of those caught up in conflict, can alone testify to the cruelty and ferociousness of war. These are not only images of violence, but also photographs of faces, family members, men and women. They are fragments of a life carried in the pockets of Moroccan soldiers, images and self-portraits by those struggling in the Sahrawi resistance. Instantaneous images of people on both sides of the conflict, that carry within them the drama of violence, interrupted relationships, suffering for the lost of loved ones, the sorrow of separation and exile.
There will be a live link with the Sahrawi camps during the conference.
