Paolo Gioli

Palazzo Casotti
30 April - 8 June 2008
Images of torsos, busts, anatomy and portraits as identification photos in the exhibition by Gioli in Reggio Emilia. A kaleidoscope of forty 50x60 Polaroid images on the human body, a classic theme dear to Gioli, where he poses the subject in a form of dramatisation, sometimes cutting out clear fragments of a person, such as the face, hands and other parts of the body. Now that Polaroid has finally closed its shutters and stopped producing its film, Gioli’s exhibition is a timely tribute to the Polaroid and its inventor, from the artist that has most creatively explored it in his work.
Fotografia Europea has chosen five European photographers from five different eras and contexts, able to offer the main facets – as well as, in some cases, a first hand theoretical reflection – of modern problems. This section starts with the present day and offers some historical cross-references with a sample that typifies a possible approach, including famous figures, sometimes seen as eccentric in terms of the most widespread reflection. Together with Paolo Gioli this section includes Raoul Hausmann, Jorge Molder, Pierre et Gilles and Wols.
