3 May 2009, 21.30 - Chiesa Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta, piazza Prampolini

Le Confessioni di Sant’Agostino

Promoted by the Municipality of Reggio Emilia (Culture department) and the Diocese of Reggio Emilia-Guastalla (Cultural Heritage Office)

An original evening, the result of the cooperation between the Soli Deo Gloria concert season and Fotografia Europea 2009, in which the issue of Eternity is proposed through the reading of some pages  of the Confessions of St. Augustine. The texts are chosen by the Bishop of Reggio Emilia and Guastalla, Mons. Adriano Caprioli, author of several books, including the volume “Cristiano con voi. Le conversioni di Agostino; while the interpretation of the Confessions is entrusted to the voice of Alessandro Preziosi, a popular and much-loved actor who not only has a personal interest in the Augustine text but will soon be seen on TV starring in a screenplay on the life of the saint. The Confessions represent “the great prayer” through which at the start of his episcopate, St. Augustine (354-430) traces the spiritual and biographical journey which led him to faith and his meeting with Jesus Christ. “Confessing”, meaning praising God and placing one’s own human and spiritual experience before oneself in a sincere manner,  the Confessions bear witness to an interior journey searching for the truth, at the end of which - but in fact at every stage of the journey - God reveals himself to Augustine as "ancient yet ever new beauty”, as the One in which man’s heart finally finds peace. Read incessantly for the past fifteen centuries, the Confessions of St. Augustine is one of the great classics of spirituality and literature of all times. The readings alternate with music chosen specially for the occasion by the laReverdie ensemble, specialising in Medieval music, which has always been committed to themes of great cultural and symbolic value. The ideal setting for this highly spiritual event is offered by the Cathedral
