A JAUNT

“a jaunt” is Elena Arzuffi’s project commissioned by Fotografia Europea, for the Gattaglio neighbourhood in Reggio Emilia. Her artistic research is marked by her ability to mix photography and drawing – side by side, overlapping, alternated in the rapid fluidity of a video montage – rendering them complementary in a personal synthesis in which the authentic rhythms of life pulsate. Using these techniques to move freely between the real, memory and imagination, Arzuffi traces the interior universe of a character who, used to living holed up indoors, decides to go out on his bike with his dog. Or that’s how it seems, as the meaning of the images in Elena Arzuffi’s poetics must never be taken for granted.

BIOGRAPHY

After having graduated in semiotics from the University of Bologna, she specialised in digital technologies and then dedicated herself to video post-production, at the same time teaching specialist courses at the European Design Institute (IED) in Milan. Since 2000 she has concentrated on photography, design, video and environmental and sound installations. She has taken part in numerous exhibitions, beginning (and continuing) a fruitful cooperation with the Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Foundation; indeed, in 2002, she took part in the show “Exit” curated by Francesco Bonami, and went on creating coordinate images for various clients. She has worked on a number of video projects which mix design and images as well as many exhibitions and festivals: she has participated in Video.it at the Gam in Turin on several occasions (2001/2/3/4), in “Visivamente”, part of the festival of philosophy in Modena, Invex in Tokyo, Videoabend in Munich, Unimovie in Pescara, Burned children of America in Treviso, Magic mystery tour in Chicago and Liquida.mente in Florence. She was invited to “Fuori pista”, an event paying homage to Carlo Mollino in Sauze D’Oulz and to m.m.m. at the Gertrude Contemporary Art Space in Melbourne. She investigates human psychology, which is what intrigues us more, using a great variety of media, including the installation.  She also realised the following: Lovely nest in Padua, curated by Gabi Scardi, then Indoor sowing curated by Chiara Agnello in  Milan, Sull’acqua curated by Elena Volpato in Turin, Spifferi in Milan, ..and “se piovesse” in Padua, and in 2008 she was invited to Nice by the directors of Group 317, to present a video diptych which uses 700 drawings to create an environmental video-projection. Since 2007 she has also dedicated her energy to public installations. She was invited to Quotidiana Aperta in Padua, where she created a sound/environmental installation dedicated to the composer Giuseppe Tartini. In 2008 she prepared an urban furnishing project for “Murati Fuori” in Viterbo entitled “una città nell’aria” (“A city in the air”). She is currently working on a video illumination project for Milan, due for completion in late 2009. She received special mention for the Icon prize in Verona for her photographic work on Ingrid Betancourt. Here in Reggio Emilia, at the invitation of Daniele De Luigi she has prepared an exhibition which re-reads the image of a neighbourhood through its visual and emotional codes.
