KOMMUNALKA

My very first days in these communal apartments in St Petersburg were absolutely perplexing, and I realised it would take me several stays and an inside contact to get to the bottom of these weird, closed-off environments. Over several years I photographed the place and the daily life of the residents – and especially of Natacha, who set the rhythm of my visits. Implicitly, and without my realising it, she became the main strand in my narrative and in my desire to be there and stay there. She embodies the quintessence of these communal worlds and the magnetism of a city that has been gnawing at me for so many years. How many times have I stood simply hypnotised by these disturbing visions of light and shade? Who spoke to me of ghosts? Who told me that at night in St Petersburg you can see the invisible and dream of the unutterable? (Francoise Huguier)

BIOGRAPHY

A great traveller, with a preference for Africa, whose photographs are the subject of two works: Sur les traces de l'Afrique fantôme (on the trail of Michel Leiris, published in Italy under the title "L'Africa fantasma") and Sécretes ("Secrets", the private life of African women), published respectively in 1990 by Editions Maeght and, in 1996, by Actes Sud. In 1998 she exhibited at the European House of Photography in Paris with A l'Extrême ("To the extreme"), a work done over many years in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. In 1991, she discovered the photographers Seydou Keita and Malick Sidibé (awarded the international photography prize in 2003) and contributed to the dissemination of their works. In 1994, she inaugurated the first African Photography Biennial in Bamako.
Winner of the "Villa Médicis Hors Les Murs" prize for Sur les traces de l’Afrique fantôme, she again won the prize in 1993 for her travel journal En route pour Behring (Editions Maeght, published in Italy under the title "Note di viaggio in Siberia"), a collection of  photographs which describe her solitary journey in Siberia. These photographs, exhibited in many shows and galleries, won her the recognition of the World Press in 1993. Then, after spending many years in Saint Petersburg, where in 2007 she made a film on private lives in a shared apartment, from which the book Kommounalki was made, published by Actes Sud in 2008.
In 2006, she returned to her own childhood imprisoned by the Viêt-minh  in Cambodia in the book ‘J’avais huit ans’ ("I was eight years old", published in 2006 by Actes Sud).
Since 1983, twice a year, she photographs the haut couture fashion shows and illustrates the activity on and off the catwalk. In 1999 she published the book Sublimes ("Sublimes", published by Actes Sud).
All her books have been the subject of exhibitions around the world.

PARTNERSHIP WITH ''LES RENCONTRES D'ARLES''

Fotografia Europea 2009 sees the inauguration of a partnership with the Rencontres d'Arles, one of the most important photography festivals in the world, which this year is celebrating its fortieth edition. The exhibition “Kommunalka”, produced in Arles last summer and presented here in a revisited version curated by Laura Serani , is the result of this new cooperation, which confirms Reggio Emilia as an important player in the current photography scene.

Through more than sixty exhibitions installed in various locations of exceptional heritage in the city of Arles, every year, for forty years now, the “Rencontres d’Arles” contribute to passing on the world’s photographic heritage and aims to be the cradle of contemporary creation, with the “Prix Découverte offering a forum for new talent ”. Since 1970, the Rencontres d’Arles have largely contributed to the recognition of photography as an artistic expression, and to the training of the skills of many professional and amateur photographers. Thanks to its programming of mainly unique events, the Rencontres d’Arles have become a reference festival of international magnitude. The setting of the exhibitions becomes a veritable stage for certain historical places, some of them only open to the public during the festival. To be on the lookout for the evolution of the trends and approaches of the photographed subject and the plastic arts. To keep informed about new techniques which offer a different conception of photographic exhibition for a wider public, and a real relationship with the image. These are the missions of the Rencontres d’Arles.

During the week of the festival, conferences, debates and visits to the exhibitions are organised, inviting the participating photographers and other professionals involved to talk about their work or about the questions raised by the exhibited works. Joining photographers and theoreticians of the contemporary photography world, the Rencontres d’Arles conference takes a serious look at the specificity of photography, in artistic and technical terms but also in terms of cultural policy.

The week-long event takes place in a party atmosphere, with shows and projections in the ‘Théâtre Antique’ every evening, or in the form of a photographic promenade through the streets of Arles.
