TOUT UN MONDE - TUTTO UN MONDO

There is a whole world in Katy Couprie’s pictures : there are trees, grass growing on the bank of a stream, coloured paper boats, flowers which populate our thoughts. There is photography, which fixes the moment and makes it immortal, alongside the illustrations which tell a story of sequences, references, of congruous and incongruous events. There is the surprise over the unusual, alongside the reassurances of a daily routine which is able to create wonder.

BIOGRAPHY

Katy Couprie was born in 1966 in Fontenay-aux-Roses. In 1990 she graduated from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs (ENSAD) in Paris, where she worked with various artistic techniques (photography, design, architecture, video, printing and engraving). She went on studying photography at the School of the Art Institute in Chicago. Katy Couprie considers the children’s book as a space of great freedom and creation. Her first projects, done without the collaboration of an editor, start with small elements: an idea, a sentence, a note. Her first editorial experience was an album without words, made of photographs, in which the sequences are constructed according to a very simple structure. In 1991, Robert Pinou gave her the opportunity to work on the relationship between text and images for the first time. Since the publication in 1999 of Tout un monde she has regularly collaborated with Antonin Louchard for Thierry Magnier, creating “imagiers” and chunky board books. Parallel to her work as an illustrator, Katy Couprie regularly exhibits her work and continues to target an adult public, even though the children's book world has kept her busy for 13 years and has given her the chance to create highly innovative works.
