Hipstamatic for San Lazzaro

On being invited to enter the Padiglione Lombroso (Lombroso Wing) – a living testimony to something that is no more – the five photographers Fabrizio Cicconi, Marcello Grassi, Marco Manfredini, Fabrizio Orsi and Kai-Uwe Schulte-Bunert, armed with an iPhone and using only its Hipstamatic function, captured fleeting yet peculiarly indelible signs of the building. Everything had to happen very quickly, as if the photographers had to work under some degree of coercion, a forced containment of their vision. It is as if the images, caught by a cell-phone in a flash, were sweeping, in wonder, through crystals of time.

FABRIZIO CICCONI
Born in Reggio Emilia in 1964. He started practising as a professional photographer in 1987. Since the very beginning of his career his studies focussed on the image of man, as shown by his first solo exhibit entitled Padani, held at Palazzo Ruini in Reggio Emilia in 1991. His work on portraits has given him the opportunity to work with several cultural institutions and music groups. He also works for magazines and agencies, producing nationwide advertising campaigns. In April 1995, he worked with film directors Davide Ferrario and Guido Chiesa on the production of a book to mark the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II, documenting the cultural initiative  "Materiale Resistente" (resistant material), organized by the Municipality of Correggio in collaboration with the C.S.I. independent musicians consortia. Between 2003 and 2004, he conducted a project to document public transport for the ACT public bus company, produced by Sarah Grugnetti and with the collaboration of Stefano Giovannelli from the “Foletti &Petrillo design” company, which culminated in his solo exhibit entitled  “Una città in Movimento” (A city in motion) held at Palazzo Magnani in Reggio Emilia. In 2005, he documented a Kolchoz in Uzbekistan, working with writer Giorgio Messori. This particular work was featured in the exhibition entitled “Politotdel”, curated by Raffaella Guidobono, held at the A.K.A. Gallery as part of the circuit of the Rome international photography exhibition programme curated by Marco Delogu. Between 2006 and 2007, he worked on a joint project with his German colleague Kai-Uwe Schulte-Bunert on the subject of two divided cities: Gorizia-Nova Gorica in Italy and Görlitz-Zgorzelec in Germany. The project, entitled “2_ luoghi divisi” (2_divided places) and supported by different funding institutions and sponsors, was exhibited at various European venues, including in Berlin in 2008 on the occasion of the European Month of Photography. In 2010, he started a study on moonlight, mainly photographing natural settings under the light of the full moon. Through this project, he started working with a flower workshop for the production of seasonal exhibitions. In addition to several solo exhibits, he has taken part in various group exhibits, including Portfolio, images in motion, under the Modena  per  la  fotografia  (Modena for photography) initiative (1995);  AEmilia, held at the Antico  Foro  Boario  in  Reggio  Emilia  (1996) and curated by L. Gasparini  and  R. MARCELLO GRASSI
Born in Reggio Emilia in 1960. In 1985, after visiting several exhibitions in the Anno degli Etruschi (Year of the Etruscans) programme, he designed and produced a work of “visual excavation” in the sites, cities and necropolises of Etruscan civilization (in the regions of Emilia Romagna, Lazio, Tuscany and Umbria). In 1999, his book Etruria was published by Federico Motta Editore on the occasion of the exhibition of his photos at the Musée Reattu in Arles. In 1992, he was commissioned to photograph the finds housed in the Garden and the Marbles Gallery of Reggio Emilia’s City Museums. This initial series of commissioned photos sparked off an extensive study on the Anatomy of Time, conducted in museums and archaeological sites in Italy and Europe (Arles, Berlin, Bologna, Brescia, Grosseto, Nice, Parma, Rome and Turin). In 1995, he started working on a series of photos – entitled Giardino di Borges (Garden of Borges) – on the relationship between the real and the unreal, based on the collections housed in the zoology rooms of Italian museums. From 1994 to 1996, he photographed the French city of Arles. In 1997, he produced a photo-report on the local archaeological site, commissioned by the Musée Archéologique of Nice-Cimiez. In 1998, he was invited by the Province of Reggio Emilia to photograph the Cistercian monastery in Maulbronn as part of the cultural exchange programme of its twinning project with the Province of Enzkreis in Germany. In 1999, he started a campaign by images on the Ducal Palace of Sassuolo, completed in 2002. That same year he started working with Fabrizio Orsi on a project on the town of Luzzara, fifty years from the publication of the book Un Paese by Cesare Zavattini and Paul Strand. The book Luzzara. Cinquant'anni e più...(Luzzara. Fifty years and over) was published by Skira Editore at the end of 2004, with a text by Luciano Ligabue. He has taken part in the Fotografia Europea 2007 festival with the work ‘Identità tra lcittà d’Europa_Berlino’ (Identity between European cities_Berlin), also produced with Fabrizio Orsi, with an accompanying text by the writer Thomas Brussig from Berlin. His solo and group exhibits have been shown in various European cities (Arles, Berlin, Chalon-Sur-Saône, Charleroi, Cortona, Lisbon, Liège, London, Milan, Modena, Nice, Paris and Saint Paul de Vence) where his photos are held by museums and institutions.

MARCO MANFREDINI
Born in Milan in 1974, he started taking photographs in 1994 and since 1997 he has been defining his own distinctive style of social reportage. That same year he produced a series of photos from southern India which he exhibited in Novellara in 1999. Also in 1999, he made a photo report of the Sahrawi refugee camp in Algeria on behalf of a humanitarian organization. His journey to the heart of the Amazon forest in Brazil in 2004 gave him the opportunity to produce a series of images depicting life in an isolated village lying between forest and water. In 2007 he travelled to Bangladesh in the aftermath of cyclone Sidr and took a series of photographs highlighting the state of abandonment and desperation of the population. His photographs are held at the Musée de la Photographie in Charleroi (Belgium), the Musée d’Art et Archeologie in Aurillac (France) and the Photo Library of the Panizzi Library in Reggio Emilia.

KAI-UWE SCHULTE-BUNERT 
Born in 1969 in Aschersleben, in the former GDR, he now lives and works in Berlin. After studying History of Art and Advertising, he first approached photography during a one-year stay in Italy. From 1999 he has been devoting himself completely to photography, working for theatres, dance companies and orchestras in Germany, complementing his stage photography with exhibits and publications. From 2002, he embarked on a personal path of landscape interpretation, focussing particularly on marginal and uninhabitable spaces. Some of his solo exhibits include Wunden der Zeit Görlitz, 2004; Specie di spazio (Kind of space), Reggio Emilia, 2004; Dramatik des Alltags, Görlitz, 2005, Passaggi (Landscapes), Reggio Emilia, 2006, the Art Bag project, 2006 and the joint exhibit “2 Görlitz-Gorizia” with Fabrizio Cicconi, for the Fotografia Europea 2007 festival in Reggio Emilia. His group exhibits include Intersection 14 - Landschafts - und Architekturfotografie, Berlin, 2005, and Il volto della follia. Cent’anni di immagini del dolore (The face of madness. A hundred years of images of pain), Reggio Emilia, 2005, Movement I-III, Berlin, 2007.
