To Giuseppe Mazzini, Giovine Italia (Young Italy) was the fraternity of those Italians who believed in the law of Progress for a new Italy called upon to be free and united. It was an association, followed particularly by young people, that was to tread different paths from those followed hitherto. Today, at 150 years from the problematic unification of our nation, there is a persisting wish among many young artists to “tread different paths” while observing Italy. We perceive their need to resist, to oppose the vulgarity and violence we are surrounded by, to chronicle an intimate Italy, far removed from rhetorical and predictable representations. As a way of counteracting the extreme visibility of the mass media, they offer works which conceal something invisible and mysterious; they prefer silence, open time intervals and free associations to deafening sounds. With a lightly poetic touch, these young authors cast an inquiring glance over an Italy that is no longer “young”, in a quest for opening gaps, unthought-of spaces, short stories that nobody seems to want to listen to. Their goal is not to denounce the wrongs and horrors of the nation, but to create works that are like small but tenacious rays of light within the darkness.
The exhibit includes photographs, videos, installations and drawings.
