Pierre et Gilles experiment with a new way of representing the human body, through a series of self-portraits, in a clear contrast with their previous work. The two artists turn their backs on the sunny, hedonistic atmosphere that was a feature of their past creations and make it difficult for the viewer to interpret the sense of the images. At first, one cannot distinguish much of the chaos made up of phosphorescence and tortured forms, but there is nothing repulsive in this first impression. The apparent inscrutability of these works is extremely fascinating for the viewer. The images in the series can be interpreted according to various, complementary methods. The two artists continue to show their implacable need for perfection, which makes them capable of producing prodigiously complex images without ever resorting to the ease of technology.
Fotografia Europea has chosen five European photographers from five different eras and contexts, able to offer the main facets – as well as, in some cases, a first hand
theoretical reflection – of modern problems. This section starts with the present day and offers some historical cross-references with a sample that typifies a possible approach, including famous figures, sometimes seen as eccentric in terms of the most widespread reflection. Together with
Pierre et Gilles this section includes
Paolo Gioli,
Raoul Hausmann,
Jorge Molder and
Wols.
