Biography
JORGE MOLDER
Jorge Molder was born in 1947 in Lisbon, where he still lives and works. He was interested in the plastic arts from childhood: “The first exhibition I saw was with my father, at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, when I was ten years old,” he recalls. Jorge Molder graduated in Philosophy at the Universidade Classica in Lisbon. Between 1976 and 1990 he held various roles at the Ministry of Justice.
His work is largely made up of ad hoc self portraits that involve the spectator in an interplay of gazes, details and backlighting, creating mysterious, suggestive atmospheres.
He was invited to the Saint Paul Biennale in 1994 and, in 1999, represented Portugal at the Venice Biennale. In December 2001 his work was exhibited at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris. He has taken part in several group and many solo exhibitions, both at home and abroad. Jorge Molder is a Chevalier of the Order of the Infante Don. Henrique and Chevalier of Arts and Literature.
