7th May - 13rd June 2010 curated by Fondazione Marconi, Milano HOMAGE TO MAN RAYOne of the highlights of the new Fotografia Europea exhibition programme will be the tribute to the great photographer Man Ray, organized in collaboration with the Fondazione Marconi from Milan. As well as being known as a painter, creator of objects and author of avant-garde films, Man Ray (1890, Philadelphia – 1976, Paris) is first and foremost a renowned Dada and surrealist photographer. His hypnotic gaze has transformed everything it has been cast upon, from objects to people, both in the artistic sphere and in the world of fashion and reporting.
Born in Philadelphia in 1980 from Jews parents of Russian origin who had emigrated to the United States, Man Ray (the pseudonym for Emmanuel Radnitzsky) came into contact with Alfred Stieglitz and the New York avant-garde circles in the nineteen tens. After his initial works inspired by cubism he started experimenting with various techniques, including collage, sculpture, assemblage, and aerograph painting, and went on to devote himself to photography. Together with Marcel Duchamp he was the main driving force behind the New York Dada movement. It was at this stage of his career that he produced his first “objects of affection”, including the renowned Enigme d’Isidore Ducasse. In 1921 he moved to Paris. He started to produce his first Rayographs, worked on films and forged ties with the Surrealists, together with whom he displayed his own works at the Galerie Pierre in 1925 and at all subsequent exhibits. He lived in Paris until 1940, earning a reputation as one of the best interpreters of surrealist poetics, with paintings, assemblages of objects, art films and photographic experimentations. After the war broke out he left for the United States and went to Los Angeles, where he lived until 1951. Once back in Paris, he continued with his photographic experimentations. In 1961 he was awarded the gold medal for photography at the Venice Biennale. In 1966 the Los Angeles County Museum of Art held the first major retrospect exhibit of his work. The artist died in Paris on 18th November 1976. The exhibit will be documenting all the different contexts of his enchanted view of the world – including compositions, rayographs, portraits of his great artist friends (from Picasso to Giacometti, Brancusi, de Chirico, Duchamp, and the surrealists) and of his stunning models (Lee Miller, Kiki, Juliet), fashion photographs and much else besides – spanning across his entire creative career, from the twenties to the fifties. BIOGRAPHYMan Ray (Emmanuel Radnitzsky) was born in Philadelphia in 1890, the child of Russian-Jewish immigrants to the United States. After completing secondary school education and some basic courses in industrial design, he attended the Ferrer Center and came into contact with Alfred Stieglitz and the New York avant-garde circles. After his early works inspired by cubism he started experimenting with a variety of techniques – including collage, sculpture, assemblage, and aerograph painting – and developing his photographic work. Together with Marcel Duchamp he was the main driving force behind the New York Dada movement and the promoter of many initiatives, from founding the Society of Independent Artists (1916) and the Société Anonyme Inc. (1920) to the publication of the “New York Dada” magazine (1921). PHOTOGALLERYINFORMATIONInfo:
