Mark Borthwick (born in London in 1962) is currently living and working in New York.
He is regarded as one of the most influential photographers of his generation and has photographed for all the major fashion magazines (“i-D”, “Interview”, “Vogue Italian”, “Liberation”, “Purple”, “Self Service”, “Another Magazine”, “The Face”, "Pop" and so on) and fashion designers (Martin Margiela, Comme des Garçons, Yohji Yamamoto, Hussein Chalayan, Maria Cornejo Nike and Bless).
Half way between an anti-conformist fashion photographer and an artist who “casually” deals with fashion, Borthwick has definitely left his mark. He has launched a new way of approaching fashion photography and created his own peculiar poetics made of intimate and analogical, often superimposed, shots in which he plays on the cross references between nature, clothes, people and light.
For most of these exhibitions there collective gathering's where by he introduces an energy that close to the one found at his home where cooking an playing music opportune people to come together and inspire everyone to join in...there by truly nurturing the notion that life is ones art...an the energy that transpires is collectively shared...an engaged.
Recent shows have incorporated theater and installation works and tea ceremonies in the traditional sense.
His exhibitions have a distinctive naïve and hippie approach, in which the artist introduces musical performances and happenings, engaging other musicians and the community at large.
During his career he has photographed the “who's who” of the international creative scene. Bjork, Patti Smith, Chloe Sevigny, Kim Gordon, Cat Power, Maurizio Cattelan, Sinead O'Connor, Josephine Foster are just a few of the artists he has portrayed through the course of his twenty-year career.
His recently published book entitled “not in fashion”, published by Rizzoli USA, is a vital testimony to his avant-garde art, expressed through, among other things, poems and collages.
His works have been exhibited all over the world, including at the Haus der Photographie Deichtorhallen in Hamburg, the Fotomuseum Winterthur, Colette in Paris, the Viaux Gallery for Fashion Photography and Gallery Neu in Berlin, Half Gallery and the Journal in New York, Mameg in Los Angeles and so on.
He also has exhibited extensively in Japan through his gallery Junko Shimada.
