We sometimes happen to witness minute fractions of time, magic instants in which a fortunate combination of light, perspective and bodies creates the unrepeatable condition in which the invisible becomes visible.
These fleeting moments instil a sense of wonder and marvel in our perception of everyday things and events.
As Wislawa Szymborska wrote: “I need to be very quick when capturing clouds – after a fraction of a second they are no longer what they were, and are already becoming something else”.
The selection of photographs I am presenting is meant to demonstrate that these moments do indeed exist.
Alessia Bernardini was born in Milan in 1979. During her time there as a high school student in classical studies, rummaging through the family wardrobes she came across a Nikon F2 camera.
Firmly believing that art and social issues can come together and interact to advantage, she tried to get an education in both subjects. Hence, at nearly thirty years of age she is still unable to classify herself under a single professional definition, except that of being “without a permanent professional definition”.
She has lived in Paris, Porto Alegre, and Naples and in the latter two cities, she started working in the artistic sphere with a focus on social development, engaged on projects involving the observation and transformation of the local area.
She has developed professionally through various internships and collaborations – including with Magnumphoto in Paris and Francesco Jodice in Milan – and has drawn selective inspiration from the work of Bruno Munari, Franco Vaccari, Sara Moon, Michael Akerman, Duane Michaels, Wim Wenders and Wislawa Szymborska.
She is currently engaged in co-founding with Francesca Marconi the creative enterprise Latutamondo, an ongoing workshop of artistic and social experimentation.
For the time being, she is living and working in Milan.
