We are prisoners of a spell. Our project is to stay awake.
The factories are nailed to the Santa Croce neighbourhood, suspended in the air, waiting to die. The last remaining workers are tiny creatures moving in a huge space while the work itself has been deported. The enchantment of the factory gutted while still alive is agonizing. We know how those who only leave behind the factory shells behave, those who change the meaning of words, leaving their appearance intact. We will call everything exactly by its name. This will be our resistance. If all the voices in the vocabulary rise up, it will be revolution.
We will open a DOPOLAVORO through the power of words. We are having a month-long sit-in in a space, like the year-long sit-in at the REGGIANE factories.
With no image to represent us, our enchantment is the power of our words.
Teatro dei Quartieri (Neighbourhood theatre) is the collective name for this single, disparate body of works with a tangible presence in the local area and a deep social sensibility. It brings together neighbourhood artists engaging in eclectic experiments, suggested and shared with those living in the city suburbs, overwhelmed by irresistible projects for which everyone feels responsible. In 2009 this collaborative venture produced Aperto al Pubblico/trasloco popolare, a rich exhibit of emotional materials rescued from the demolition of a working-class neighbourhood.
The following artists form the core group of the DOPOLAVORO project for Fotografia Europea 2010: Fabrizio Cicconi – born in 1964 and a photographer since 1987 – whose research has focussed on the human image since the start of his career and has held exhibits at various national and international venues; Lorenza Franzoni, founder of the Teatro dei Quartieri and spokesperson for the Partigiani Urbani; Mirella Gazzotti – author and actress – who trained with Otello Sarzi and is the founder of the Teatro della Fragola; Pietro Iori – a graduate from the Fine Arts Academy in Bologna – who has held personal and collective exhibits nationally and internationally and uses photography as a pictorial-conceptual tool; Manuela Pecorari – art director and graphic designer – who has participated in various festivals and collective exhibits as a documentary and visual artist; and Alessandro Scillitani – video-maker and events organizer – who makes documentaries, video-clips and visual materials for concerts and theatre performances.
